How do I choose a dentist?

When was the last time you went to the dentist?

Don’t wait until you have a toothache before you start looking for a dentist. Having a regular dentist will help you to prevent problems before they happen!

You should approach finding a dentist like you may do your family doctor – it is a relationship you are going to have into the future. Much like a hairdresser, you should find someone you like and trust.

One way to find a dentist is to ask family and friends for recommendations. If they’ve had a good experience with their dentist, it’s likely that you will too. Alternatively, you can use the Australian Dental Association’s Find a Dentist search tool. If you are moving to another city and leaving your regular dentist, they may recommend someone once you have made the move.

Some things you can consider when searching for a dentist include:
  • Are you looking for a dentist close to your home or work? Do they offer after-hours care?
  • Does the practice have adequate parking, within walking distance or is it close to public transport?
  • What services do they offer?
Some things to reflect on after you visit a dentist for the first time include:
  • Were the dentist and the practice staff friendly and approachable? Were they able to provide information about fees, appointments and service availability?
  • Did the dentist explain what they were doing in a way that you could understand? Were your concerns addressed?
  • Did the dentist talk to you about preventive care, such as brushing and flossing?
  • Was the practice clean and inviting?
It is recommended that you visit your dentist every six months for a thorough check-up and clean to maintain good oral health.
